Banished is an award winning opera by Stephen McNeff, it tells the compelling story of female prisoners who were transported to Australia in the last years of the eighteenth century. One of the most poignant moments occurs when the trapdoor of the boat is opened for the first time and light floods in, dazing the women. Using six different posters I have shown this one moment through the eyes of the six main characters. The soft, beautiful imagery is paired with harsh, gridded typography. This juxtaposition is used to create a tension between the oppression these women face and their ability to stay positive no matter what they face.
